Research image One

This image was taken from a cook book, unfortunately the photographer is not mentioned. I love this image, the colour work well, the orange with the green herbs and the pumpkin seeds show that this is pumpkin soup without actually showing any reference to an actual pumpkin. The composition works really well sowing rule of thirds, the bowl of soup, spoon chopping board and herbs are all in the frame at the left hand side of the image showing the right side with open space. I believe the lighting for this image would have probably been on main key list directly from above. The shadowing from underneath each bowl shows this as if they light were coming from above the image then the light would not reach underneath the soup bowl. I like how the overall soup bowl has been neatly presented although randomly scattered. I do feel though that the the composition is quite bare, there are too many elements on the left hand side and empty on the right. Maybe using some bread or even crumbs would have benefited in the image.

Research image TWO

This second image I feel has an even more autumn feel to it. there is lot more shadow and depth present, the wool knitted cloth also gives a warmth. This image is filling the frame and I like how the soup is the main focus, using pumpkins as the key element as well as having the soup inside one of the actual pumpkins. Colours all work together giving neutral tones. I believe possibly one key light has been used coming from the right at a 90 degree angle or possibly window light, or at least making it look like window lighting. the light is subject to the right hand side of the image and the shadow is at the left hand side of the image. I love the vibe of the autumn feel around this image, the dark contrast with the orange and white pumpkins makes it pop as well as making it feel warm and homely.

Camera settings 100-f1.8-1/60, Canon 2000d, fixed 50mm lens Adobe RGB
The image was crated in October, the ideal time for buying pumpkins. I used this opportunity to create an image with a variety of shapes and sized of pumpkins to give diversity. I used a jar of tomato pasta sauce to give the effect of homemade pumpkin soup which worked well. The colour was just right and so was the texture. In my arrangement I used complimenting colours for the bowl and table wear, I feel like these give a nice warm and homely feel, along with the wooden board to replicate a table. I used one main frontal with soft box light directly facing downward onto my arrangement at f1.8 to accustom my camera settings. I ad to move my soft box quite far in order to achieve this low aperture. I feel this image works very weak for what it is intended and would make a striking advert along with a logo for any brand or make of pumpkin soup. The composition is relaxed and facing straight onward from above the arrangement, slightly off centre and filling the frame whilst making the soup itself the main focus. I like how the pumpkins themselves are still quite striking but not quite in the shallow depth of field giving character. If I were to do tis shoot again I would perhaps use real herbs instead of plastic.

Post Production

  • filtered images using star rating
  • chose the best image and opened it using camera raw
  • changed colour profile to artistic 04 x 137
  • using masking tool I change the appearance of the swirl in the soup in the image ring exposure and contrast
  • I ten used the feather tool to adjust shape of the swirl in the image to make it more natural
  • once I was happy with my image I saved it as a 10x8 300ppi image size
  • saved it as a jpeg and p.shop file in appropriate folder
