 Escape

Organised planning or Escape

Editorial Photography

This is a style of photography where an image or images in a magazine support a written article, to help tell a story or educate the reader. Theses are images that give and set the mood.

Plan

My idea is to think out of the box and not use a subject that is consistent with the word escape. To keep in line with the rest of my portfolio creating images around addiction or mental health would prove beneficial and creative.

  • Addiction to gaming
  • Poor mental health

Image 1

In this image the Mother taking off the child's headset or at least attempting to. The child does not look happy and is trying to prevent his headset being removed by holding the adults arms. The look the child is giving is both trying to concentrate and annoyed that he is being disturbed. The image is in center view and the focus is drawn to the little boys expression. This image seems to have been taken with deep depth of field and is quite neutral in color and very well lit. this image was perhaps taken in a studio environment with lighting coming from the lest hand side, potentially 45 degree lighting. the background is also well lit leading me to think there has been secondary strobe lighting used as well. Although i like the concept of this image as it portrays a certain mood and message, I feel as though it is rather boring. there could have been other element used to make it more interesting or the colours could have been a little more vibrant.

Image 2

This image is still taken in portrait style although has a different look on what the first image does. This man is sitting in a room and appears to be alone in the dark on the floor with his legs crossed. The light from the screen is presenting in fluorescent blue light and he appears to be very focused on what ever is happening in front of him. He seems tense although concentrating with a gaming controller of some sort in his hands. I think this image too was perhaps taken in a studio setting although it could have been taken in any dark room or area. The only light is coming straight in front of the model so this would be the only lighting used. It could have been used with a color gel in blue to give the illusion of the TV being switched on. The composition is filling the frame and the main focus is on the models face and the controller. I think this image works well, it draws the eye in given the colour and the stern expression. I think there could have been less negative space around the model and the image could have been cropped a little but all in all i think it is a good image and reflects the word escape well in my own interpretation.

Video gaming had vastly become more and more popular, particularly with teenager in this culture. It is also how some adults relax after a busy day in reality and can prove a retrieve from every day normal stressful life. Video games are design to glue us to the screen, but this is having a detrimental effect on peoples mental health and causing addiction. I wanted to capture an image that told a story without words, that drew the reader in before actually reading.

My Work

Created using window lighting technique using Canon 2000d, 18-300mm lens.1/20-f5-100. How I progressed this image is illustrated below. My thought process for this image stemmed from todays youth society, particularly males and teens. A common concept to media, technology and games consoles is that it takes up pretty much of everyone's time and time gets carried away from us whilst doing so. I used the games console and controller with the chain and padlock for my image. I found this gives a strong message regarding the addiction people face when I comes to this technology. I myself having faced this with my teenage son. The padlock and chain represent the ability to feel attached and trapped. The hands sit in the playing position pressing buttons freely. The composition fills the frame whilst being taken in an unusual angle as a close up. this gives the main focus to the whole image itself. The first creative image was done by using the same equipment above but with the lens catering the image though a keyhole silhouette then transformed in black and white I feel this image works stronger. I used a piece of cardboard and cut the keyhole shape out and placed this in front of my camera lens, i then allowed my model to relax in the same position he would if he was in fact playing with his PlayStation. I felt as though both these images worked well together as the first image shows the player through the keyhole, the controller detail is quite soft so i felt a close up if the controller and chain would give a better over mood,

How it was Created

  • filter images using camera raw star rating
  • changed image to black and white
  • edited contrast to give more striking effect
  • altered canvas size by double in with
  • dragged images into same open photoshop window
  • cropped to neaten
  • saved image as appropriate file type for print
  • saved a jpeg file
