Image 1
This image was taken a photographer named Matin Belan, this image was taken from his blog online on the above link. He loves photographing outdoors but has a great enthusiasm for photographing flowers which is not possible to do in winter, So he spends his winter months in the Studio. I love this photo in monochrome. It gives great contrast from the flower itself and the background. The image looks almost painted with great definition and texture. the light and shadow compliment the image well. I believe this image would have been taken in the studio against a black background. Possibly lay flat against with the image being taken directly from above. The lighting i think would have been used is one single main light with soft box to give a soft lighting. lighting also coming directly from above given the lack of shadow coming from either side. There is one single flower in the image, it provides just the right amount of detail and does not take the image busy. The composition works well, it is not quite rule of thirds but sits slightly off center giving it an unusual angle.
Image 2
This image i found was taken by an unknown photographer. Again i like how this image is taken against a black background drawing attention to the detail and the colour of the flower itself. The image is right on centre of the frame and again i believe this has been taken from above with the flower lay flat against a back background, single use lighting used with DSLR with a soft box comping straight from above as there is no shadow present from either side of the flower. The colours work well, the are almost pastel like and using just one single flower heads draws attention to its main focus with no distractions.
Plan
My plan is to produce a image of a flower in a studio setting using close up or macro photography, using one single or two flower heads to avoid distraction. I did originally plan to use a bunch of flowers but i felt that this was not necessary in what i wanted to achieve. I wanted to achieve a simple studio still image similar to those in my research. I dont believe you need to have a lot going on in an image to make it interesting. I want to evoke mood and demonstrate that one single object can also be used in a still life photography image. The image i have created is minimalist, had clean features with no distractions and gives focus to one object only, the background has been kept clean and uncluttered.

I decided i would create my image using a black background, I felt that with the bright colours withing the flowers that i was using this would give an element of contrast whilst still creating an aesthetically pleasing image. I took this image in my home studio and set it up as follows. I used a table with a black coloured card as the main backdrop. I arrange my flowers in many different arrangements. I then set up one main studio light giving light at a 45 degree angle from my display as i wanted to create a little bit of depth to the flower as it was quite delicate. using my light meter i set up my camera to suit the settings as sated above. I took my image originally from above but found using a lower angle worked well. I tried to take my image as close as i could to give as much information as possible. setting up my tripod, i then manually focused onto my image and took several shots, some close up and some furthest away. the image i have chosen below is the image i like the most. I felt the way the shape of the flower stem and leaves then flowed into the purple of the flower bud. Both these colours work incredibly well together and with the dark background it makes the main focus of the flower stand out. I also like out of all the flowers i had available this was probably the least 'flower' looking of them all. This flower had not yet fully opened but it adds to the look of the image.
Post production
Upon Finishing my shoot i star rated each image from one to five. I then compared each of the 5 rated images and decided this was the best image. I opened the image using Camera raw firstly, i created a mask layer and selected background, my intentions were to slightly darker the background as i found it looked rather grey. To do this i lowered the exposure on the background ever so slightly. I then used another mask layer and selected object, i then slight heightened the saturation to give the purple of the flower more of pop. I then opened the image in Photoshop and got rid of some little flaws and pieces of dust from the background. I saved the images a 10x8'' 300ppi ready for print and saved as a jpeg into appropriate hard drive.
