High Key

 High Key

High key photography is what is used in the studio involving unusually bright lighting to reduce and blow out dark shadows in an image. These images usually incorporate light tones and avoid darker tones. High key images work well with either very little or small elements of bright colour. I decided to do my high key image on my sitter with naturally vibrant copper hair. This shoot was done in a studio using only one key light and a white background. My sitter lay on the white backdrop and I positioned her hair in a natural lay down fashion. I did not use a tripod for this image due to the angle I needed to use. The composition of my image is coming in from the left towards the top right at an angle whilst still filling the frame. I love how the brightness and contrast of my models hair stands out even though still remaining low key. The different directs of her hair give definition to the image with the white popping through occasionally. The main focus is the models eyes, they are pin sharp and clear.

Research & Planning

I done a lot of research online and in magazines…I wanted to create something that was different, not a standard high key portrait. These are some of the images I came up with. It was always my intention to use a studio setting with one main frontal key light. The settings I used are above.

Create a document that looks at TWO Hi Key Style Studio shoots. Considering Style, Lighting , Composition and context

Both these images are of the same model but of very different styles, in fact it is quite difficult to tell they are the same person at first glance. The photographer for these images is unknown as I seen them on a magazine, the photographer was not named. Both images are high key. The first image is more creative being tat the model lying down looking straight at the camera, with relaxed loose clothing, eyes centred to the portrait with frontal lighting looking down onto models face. This image is a little more high key than the second, the second is more formal. The model is smiling and looking slightly off into the distance with a natural pose and her shoulders in shot and a plain white casual t-shirt.

Image one created-

  • potentially with one frontal lighting key light
  • soft box used
  • plane with background or floor sheet
  • slightly over exposed to give a smoother complexion
  • hair positioned into place framing the models face
I Believe this image could possibly have been used as an advert or as a beauty shot.  I feel this image works well for its intended purpose.

Image two created-

  • natural portrait
  • minimal to no makeup
  • natural hair over the shoulder
  • one frontal light at 45 degree angle with soft box
  •  two secondary lights to light up background
I believe this image could have been used for a personal portrait, the laughing expression gives the image a lovely relaxed feel.

Post production

Here is the image I wished to use for this brief, post production was as follows-

  • Camera Raw before and after
  • Colour grading, enhanced orange tones by upping saturation on colour mixer
  • colour grading slight adjustment to mid tones
  • masking on background to adjusted exposure slightly
